Why is this important? Decomposing food releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 80 times more potent in terms of global warming than carbon dioxide, according to the UN Environment Program. Canadians create over 50 million tons of food waste every year, and an estimated 60% of this could be avoided with better planning and awareness. Addressing food waste is critical in Canada’s fight against climate change and the reduction of nationwide food insecurity.

This year, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, with support from Loblaw Companies Ltd, aims to honor an entrepreneur or enterprise working to disrupt the cycle of food waste. Come and witness the top finalists as they present their cutting-edge ideas live at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Be part of the excitement and see who will take home the top honors. This is your chance to support and be inspired by the next wave of sustainability pioneers!

To ensure a fair and thorough evaluation, each submission will be judged on the following criteria:

Innovation (40%),  Impact (30%),  Feasibility (20%), and Presentation (10%)
